Leonard Shek Born and raised all over the San Francisco Bay Area, Leonard Shek is a poet, writer, organizer and artist. His life and work reflects the frenetic and diverse population of the Bay from 3rd generation Chinese Americans to new immigrant Chilangos from Mexico City. He has worked in restaurants, as a bike messenger, and an amateur rodeo clown. First educated at UC Berkeley in Ethnic Studies and Political Science, Leonard dropped out to attend the Academy of Art College in San Francisco to pursue the visual arts. Meanwhile his writing flourished as he began to take it to the stage. First performing at local open mics, the power in his words attracted fellow poets Mesej 1, Jason Bayani and Rupert Estanislao as they formed the spoken word collective Proletariat Bronze. He has been recognized around the Bay Area as a skillful organizer and producer of spoken word events, as well as being a captivating poet himself. His works are thoughtful, emotional and drive people to re-examine their own thinking. He has performed at UC Berkeley, the LOFT Literary Center(Minneapolis), Asian American Writers Workshop (New York), and was the first poet on the mic at the 2003 API Spoken Word/Poetry Summit in Chicago, sharing the stage with Bao Phi and Mango Tribe. He performed in a slam in Los Angeles, and though he did not win, Miss Info proclaimed him, "her favorite." Leonard currently works in the San Francisco Chinatown community and hopes to uplift youth using history, words, music and sometimes a kick in the butt. His website is www.buildordestory.com
