Brian Ascalon Roley Brian Ascalon Roley's novel, American Son (W.W. Norton 2001) has received a number of awards, including the AAAS 2003 Prose Book Award granted by the Association for Asian American Studies. It was also a New York Times Notable Book of 2001, a Los Angeles Times Best Book of 2001, and a Kiriyama Pacific Rim Prize finalist. He has also received Cornell University's Arthur Lynn Andrews Prize, a Pamana Legacy Arts Award for contributions to Philippine literature, and was a finalist for the Faulkner/Piper's Alley Award in the novella category. Brian grew up in Los Angeles. He studied philosophy at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, then spent some time working in London before he returned to California to earn a law degree from UCLA. While there he relieved the anxiety of reading poorly written casebooks by attempting to write fiction. He eventually made his way to Cornell University's MFA program on a Sage Fellowship. He lived for several years in San Francisco with his wife and new son. He is now on the graduate creative writing faculty at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
