| Music, Mayhem, and the Silver Screen: the Clarendon Hills, Goldar, Hellen Jo, & more |
Come out for a music-centric multimedia night, with bay area rockstar legends GOLDAR and THE CLARENDON HILLS, comic artist HELLEN JO, and screenings of DINO IGNACIO's animated music video of THE SKYFLAKES' "Bad Thoughts" and hip hop documentary "Beats, Rhymes, and Resistance: Pilipinos and Hip Hop in L.A.," created by Dawn Mabalon, Lakandiwa de Leon, and Jonathon Ramos. Music, comics, & movies. See you there.
BEATS RHYMES RESISTANCE: PILIPINOS & HIP HOP IN L.A. (U.S.A., 2000)
Beats Rhymes Resistance traces the development of 1990s Pilipino American cultural and political awareness through the language and music of hip hop. Incorporating elements of rap, spoken word, turntablism, and street knowledge, as well as interviews with deejays, poets, and cultural workers, Beats affords the viewer a glimpse into an emerging, energetic generation of Pilipino Americans which nevertheless operates outside of the constricts of "traditional" Pinoy culture. As presented by directors, hip hop culture has played a critical role in social awareness and self- determination for Pilipino youths of the greater Los Angeles area, and has enabled its practitioners to find a voice uniquely their own.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
THE CLARENDON HILLS are one hella potent punkrock piece of work, drawing from influences as diverse as yo mama all the way up to combat boots. If you think you've seen drum kit diving, you ain't seen nothing yet. After a song or two, you'll be ready to party hardcore & write a few sonnets in their honor (iambic pantameter and all). Give them a few bars, and they'll take a mile. Check them out at http://clarendonhills.punkrock.net/
DINO IGNACIO was born in Manila in 1974. Dino was instrumental in the rebirth of the Filipino comic book scene with his pioneering efforts with Alamat comics where he wrote and illustrated a number of books. Dino recently collaborated with Rex Navarrete on an animated short entitled "Maritess vs. the Superfriends" and finished special effects on Matt Abaya's new horror movie "Bampinay". Dino is currently working on a fully 3d animated music video for the Skyflakes.
HELLEN JO draws comics for hardboiled, an Asian Pacific American student publication at UC Berkeley, as well as for her own comic, komisches buch. She is currently working on a collaborative comic/cd split with the very debonair Clarendon Hills.
